Book 1 — Letter Sounds · Groups 1–7 · Launching 2026

Phonics, gently.

Phonics colouring books for every child — with sound built into every page, and the calm that helps kids who find busy books hard.

SoundBloom PhonicsBook 1Letter SoundsA colouring bookAges 3–7SoundBloom

Most phonics books are loud. Bright colours, busy pages, dense type. Some kids breeze through that. Others — and there are many — shut down before they’ve started.

SoundBloom is what a phonics book looks like when calm comes first. Cream pages instead of glaring white. One letter, one picture, lots of space. Every page has a small QR code that plays the sound out loud — so the hardest part of reading, blending the sounds, doesn’t depend on a parent already knowing phonics. It works for any child. It works especially well for the ones who find regular books too much.

what it is

Three quiet ideas, doing the heavy lifting.

Sensory-calibrated design

Sensory-calibrated design

Cream paper instead of glaring white. Thick outlines you can colour inside. One thing on every page. The same layout from page 1 to page 58 — calm and predictable, which makes the book easier for every child and especially for kids who find busy pages hard.

Sound built in

Sound built in

Every page has a small QR code. Point a phone at it and the SoundBloom Sounds app opens straight to that letter — no install, no account, no ads. A warm voice says the sound. That's all the app does.

A series, not a one-off

A series, not a one-off

Four books that carry each other. Letter sounds. First words. Sound pairs. Sight words. Each one a step further, with the same language and the same calm.

Neurodiverse-first, not retrofitted

Neurodiverse-first, not retrofitted

Cream paper, never white. One thing per page. No red marks for wrong answers — wrong isn't a category here. The child controls every sound. Optional everything. A book that works whether the child speaks back or not.

the approach

Five channels, one page.

A child learns a sound more durably when it arrives through more than one sense at the same time. Every SoundBloom page is designed to activate at least three.

Visual

The big colourable letter, the object beside it, and the group colour. The child sees the same layout every page, so they don't have to relearn where things live.

Auditory

Each QR code plays the sound on demand, in a warm voice — slower if you toggle it. Nothing autoplays.

Tactile-Motor

Colouring the letter and the picture activates fine motor learning. Thick 4-point outlines, never thin lines.

Phonological

The SAY IT strip cues the sound three times. No spoken response is ever required — pointing counts.

Kinaesthetic

Dot-to-dot tracing pages let the child write the shape of the letter, building muscle memory while they hear the sound.

the design

Every choice on the page has a reason.

SoundBloom · Group 1S/s/snakeSAY IT: /s/ · /s/ · /s/Point to the picture each timeGroup 1 · /s/ · Colouring
  1. 1Cream background reduces glare and visual fatigue.
  2. 2Book title · Group number — same place, every page.
  3. 3OpenDyslexic, 24pt minimum. Never serif fonts for the letter itself.
  4. 4The sound in IPA — not the letter name. A child learns /s/, not 'ess'.
  5. 5One object per page. No busy scenes.
  6. 6Thick 4pt outlines — easier to colour inside with limited fine motor control.
  7. 7Say it three times. Builds the sound in the body, not just the eye.
  8. 8Three colours, listed up front. No decision fatigue.
  9. 9QR code — 1.5 cm in print. Same layout every page. Predictability lowers anxiety.
  10. 10Group · sound · page type — orientation without clutter.

inside book 1

Twenty-six sounds. Fifty-eight pages. One calm template.

SoundBloom · Group 3F/f/fishGroup 3 · /f/ · Colouring
SoundBloom · Group 3B/b/ballGroup 3 · /b/ · Colouring

The template never changes. A is the same shape on the page as Z. After three pages, your child knows where to look. After ten, they know what to expect. That predictability is the point.

an example

A Saturday morning with Leo.

Leo is five. He’s been with the book for two weeks. This is what one minute looks like — in fourteen seconds.

SoundBloom · Group 1A/a/antSAY IT: /a/ · /a/ · /a/Point to the picture each timeGroup 1 · /a/ · ColouringSoundBloom · Group 1S/s/snakeSAY IT: /s/ · /s/ · /s/Point to the picture each timeGroup 1 · /s/ · Colouring

Leo opens to S. Same paper, same place for the letter, same place for the picture. He knows where everything is.

in use

How we imagine it being used.

(These voices are imagined — Book 1 launches in 2026. We’re sharing how we hope it will fit into real days.)

Maya

Parent of a 4-year-old

“I bought it because the pages looked calm. He sat with it longer than any book we've tried — and started recognising letters within a week. I didn't even know it had a 'sensory-friendly' angle until I read the blurb.”

Mr. Davies

Year 1 teacher

“I use it with the whole class. The QR videos let kids work at their own pace. The two children in my class with extra support needs use it the same way as everyone else — that's the part I didn't expect.”

Priya

Parent of a 5-year-old who finds most books overwhelming

“We'd given up on phonics books. My son would shut down within a minute. SoundBloom is the first one he asks for. The cream pages and the slow voice in the videos — they make the difference.”

the catalogue

Four books. Four kinds of structure.

Each book in the SoundBloom series uses the same calm template — but a different organising principle. Letters first, then words, then patterns, then whole-word recognition.

around the books

The book is the centre. These hold it up.

An app made just for the books.

Every QR opens the SoundBloom Sounds app — a tiny ad-free web app that plays just that sound. No install. No account. No tracking. No 'up next' to pull your child into a tunnel. One sound per screen, that's the whole product.

Future-proof QR codes.

Every QR in every book points to a redirect link we own. If a sound ever needs replacing or moving, the redirect updates and the book still works. The link your child scans today will still work in 2040.

Completion you can feel.

A sticker chart at the back of every book. One sticker per page completed. The chart fills up as your child progresses — completion as a felt, visible thing.

The sounds are also mirrored on a free YouTube channel — for parents who prefer their child meet the content there.

the app

Inside the SoundBloom app.

A companion to the books — never a replacement. Plays sounds from a QR scan, runs short calm modules, awards medals that can't be taken away, and tracks progress on the device. No account, no ads, no data sent anywhere unless you explicitly turn on sync.

  • Runs short calm modules: Hear → See → Trace → Find → Blend → Celebrate, ~5–8 minutes.
  • Awards medals — Seed, Star, Bloom, Streak, Gold, Diamond, Quiet, Together. Never taken away.
  • Lets up to 4 child profiles share one device — no account needed.
  • Adapts pacing gently — notices which sounds your child engages with most.
  • Weekly summary + downloadable progress PDF, useful for IEP documentation.
  • Works offline once a sound has been opened. Free, forever — every feature, every book.

Doesn't

  • Send data without explicit opt-in. Cloud sync is opt-in only.
  • Require an account, login, or email to start.
  • Show ads, recommendations, or "up next" suggestions.
  • Have premium tiers, in-app purchases, or paywalls.
  • Autoplay between sounds — your child finishes when they finish.
  • Show leaderboards or compare children to anyone else.
  • Use red marks or "wrong" indicators — no failure states for the child.
  • Make sounds without consent — every audio event requires a tap.

As much as the child needs. Never more than that.

What's next

Opt-in cloud sync across devices. Classroom mode for teachers, with anonymised group views. Tamil and Hindi editions in the same calm design system.

A small independent project. No clinic, no claims, no expertise to sell.

Every design choice in this book has a reason — the cream paper, the line weight, the empty space, the colour key. None of it is decorative. We made the book we’d want for the kids in our own lives, and shared it because other people might want it too. We’re not therapists. We’re not making medical claims. We’re just trying to make a good, calm, useful book.

questions parents ask

Six things, answered honestly.

What age is this for?

Broadly, three to seven. The pace and visual restraint also work for older children with reading delays or sensory needs — we've designed it so an eight-year-old won't feel patronised picking it up.

Isn't this just more screen time?

Each sound takes about 30 seconds in the app. The parent holds the phone. The book is the main event — the screen is a thin assist, not a babysitter. Total screen time per book: about 13 minutes spread over weeks.

Does my child need to know the alphabet already?

No. Book 1 starts from zero. Each letter is introduced as a sound first, a shape second, and a picture third — in that order, deliberately.

Is this evidence-based?

The design follows widely-accepted principles of accessible print — readable typography, low visual density, generous whitespace, restrained colour. It's not a clinical intervention and we're not making medical claims. It's just careful design.

Will the QR codes still work in five years?

Yes. Every QR points to a redirect link we own, not directly to the SoundBloom Sounds app or YouTube. If anything ever needs updating, the redirect updates and the book still works.

Who designed this?

A small independent project — no organisation behind it yet, no clinical credentials being claimed. We made the book we'd want for the kids in our own lives. If it helps yours, that's the whole point.
